Company - Community Relations

Mariana is committed to best practice regarding community relations and environmental responsibility within its project areas and surrounding districts. The Mariana team is highly experienced in this regard and has a good track record in dealing with these issues in South America and in many parts of the World. Exploration is conducted in a highly professional manner with minimisation of environmental impact a high priority. Indeed, Mariana would not be able to operate without a "Social Licence".

Mariana geologists are frequently the Company's first contact with any community. They are well-versed in local cultural sensitivities and both economic and environmental concerns of the communities. At the Guanazan Project in Southern Ecuador, for example, a positive relationship has been developed between Mariana and the community at an early stage.

Regular meetings with local and church leaders and the wider community provide a forum where the many facets of the exploration programmes are explained and any concerns are discussed. In addition, a number of initiatives are underway such as providing workshops on health issues and fire safety. Activities such as reforestation and kindergarten milk distribution are being sponsored and where possible, improvements are being made to local infrastructure. The exploration process in a remote area such as Guanazan provides the community with much needed employment opportunities.
